Social Media and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) Research and Investigation

This innovative three day (24 contact hours) course is designed to take the student into the world of social media research and investigations, in a safe and inconspicuous manner,  utilizing an abundance of social media resources that are widely used but under-considered, as sources of information for traditional investigations.

This training is a fast-paced, hands-on look at social media investigative tools geared toward the beginner to intermediate-level users. Attendees are encouraged to bring their work or personal laptops in addition to sample cases to use in this class. This course will teach students in 3 days what would normally take years of self-study.

On day one students will learn how to safely prepare a computer to conduct research and investigations online. Without compromising your identity or leaving your digital footprints, you will learn anonymization techniques to successfully conduct research and investigations. Students will be introduced to various computer operating systems, internet search engines and the use of advanced search techniques to aid in your investigations.

On day two students will start their journey into understanding the various social media sites. You will discover many non-affiliated websites that provide detailed information of individuals and their activity contained on social media sites. You will go to these social media sites, do live searches to discover what content the user might be posting as well as geofencing to determine their actual locations.

On day three students will be introduced to a number of advanced social media search techniques, websites and mobile applications. You will learn various methods to securely capture and save the information you uncovered, that will be used in your investigations. Finally, you will learn to capture photographs and videos from various social media sites and obtain the EXIF data of where pictures were taken, their source and available options to see if they are being used elsewhere on the internet.
